What changes in the PES to VP3 conversion

VP3 is the most comfortable destination for a PES design: the Brother palette is transferred into a real Husqvarna Viking / Pfaff thread table, viewable and editable in the manufacturer software.

Each PES color becomes an entry in the VP3 thread table (brand and code can be filled in if needed).
Dimensions and stitch count are preserved exactly.
Any PES digitizing notes are not carried over.
VP3 accepts far more colors than needed: no section is merged or dropped.

Understanding the PES and VP3 formats

Format PES .pes

PES is the native format of Brother and Babylock home embroidery machines (and Bernina Deco). It is one of the most widely distributed formats: most design shops offer it by default. A PES file stores stitches (positions, jumps, trims), a color section and metadata — design name, dimensions in millimeters and, depending on the version, a thread palette. When converting, these elements are read and re-encoded into the target format: the stitch count and design dimensions stay identical, while the color palette is only kept if the destination format can store one. To open a PES file outside a Brother machine: PE-Design, Embrilliance Essentials, Ink/Stitch (free) or Wilcom TrueSizer (free).

Format VP3 .vp3

VP3 is the format of Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff machines, and the richest of the five formats supported by StitchConverter. It embeds a true thread table (brand, code, color of each section), digitizing notes and a very large number of colors — well beyond the needs of a classic design. A direct consequence for conversion: it is the ideal destination for a design coming from a « flat » format (DST, EXP), since the thread table is rebuilt and stays editable in Husqvarna 6D/Premier+ or Pfaff 6D software. The other way around, converting a VP3 to a simpler format may lose the thread table and notes: stitches, however, remain strictly identical. Design dimensions are preserved in millimeters.

The conversion changes neither the stitch count nor the design dimensions: a 90 × 90 mm design remains a 90 × 90 mm design. The maximum embroiderable area depends on your machine and hoop, not on the file: simply check that the converted design dimensions fit inside your hoop. All formats supported here (PES, DST, JEF, EXP, VP3) express stitch positions in the same base unit, which allows conversion without any rescaling.
