What changes in the VP3 to EXP conversion

EXP receives the exact stitch sequence of your VP3 design, without its thread table or notes: a minimal format, perfect for Bernina and Melco machines.

Understanding the VP3 and EXP formats

Format VP3 .vp3

VP3 is the format of Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff machines, and the richest of the five formats supported by StitchConverter. It embeds a true thread table (brand, code, color of each section), digitizing notes and a very large number of colors — well beyond the needs of a classic design. A direct consequence for conversion: it is the ideal destination for a design coming from a « flat » format (DST, EXP), since the thread table is rebuilt and stays editable in Husqvarna 6D/Premier+ or Pfaff 6D software. The other way around, converting a VP3 to a simpler format may lose the thread table and notes: stitches, however, remain strictly identical. Design dimensions are preserved in millimeters.

Format EXP .exp

EXP is an embroidery (and cutting) format used by Bernina machines and Melco industrial machines. It is a deliberately minimal « flat » format: it describes the stitch, jump and trim sequence plus stops for thread changes, but it carries no color palette and no rich metadata — no design name or dimensions in a header. It is a robust choice for sending a design to the machine with no ambiguity about geometry; in exchange, colors must be assigned afterwards, on the machine or in software. When converting, stitches and the color order are carried over as-is; only the palette (if the source format has one) is lost. To open an EXP file: Bernina ArtLink (free) or Melco software.

Machine compatibility and dimensions

The conversion changes neither the stitch count nor the design dimensions: a 90 × 90 mm design remains a 90 × 90 mm design. The maximum embroiderable area depends on your machine and hoop, not on the file: simply check that the converted design dimensions fit inside your hoop. All formats supported here (PES, DST, JEF, EXP, VP3) express stitch positions in the same base unit, which allows conversion without any rescaling.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a VP3 file to EXP?

Drop your .vp3 file in the conversion area above: the conversion to EXP is automatic. All that is left is to download the converted file.

VP3 to EXP: how do I keep track of my colors?

Keep the VP3 as your reference file: the converted EXP follows the same section order, but without tints. A VP3 preview (or a capture of the thread order) is enough to assign the right threads on the machine.

How do I open a VP3 file?

VP3 files can be opened with Husqvarna 6D/Premier+ or Pfaff 6D software. You can also convert them online for free with StitchConverter.

Is the VP3 to EXP conversion free?

Yes. StitchConverter offers 2 free conversions every 24 h, with no sign-up. For unlimited use, go Premium (€1 per 24 h or €5 per month).

Do I need an account to convert a file?

No, no sign-up is required for free use. A Premium account is created automatically when you purchase, and you are identified by e-mail.
