What changes in the EXP to VP3 conversion
VP3 rebuilds everything EXP does not carry: a named thread table, a design name and clear dimensions, without touching a single stitch.
- A default thread table is created following the EXP stops, editable in Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff software.
- A design name and dimensions in millimeters are added.
- Stitches, jumps and trims are carried over as-is.
- The machine shows the color sections right in the preview, with no mandatory manual assignment.

Understanding the EXP and VP3 formats
EXP .exp · as a source file
The leanest format of all, EXP carries only the stitch, jump, trim and stop sequence — DST encoding without a header. No colors, no name, no dimensions: at conversion time the geometry passes intact and everything else is rebuilt by the target format.
- BrandsBernina (home), Melco (industrial)
- HeaderNone: the file starts directly with the stitches
- ColorsNo palette: thread-change stops
- EncodingSame as DST (3 bytes), without a header
- MetadataNone (no name, no dimensions)
VP3 .vp3 · as an output file
As a target, VP3 equips Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff machines with the most comfortable file: each section gets a named thread entry, the design is placed within the hoop, and everything stays editable in 6D/Premier+ or Pfaff 6D software. Ideal for giving colors to a design coming from a palette-less format.
- BrandsHusqvarna Viking, Pfaff
- ColorsThread table (brand, code), up to 255 colors
- MetadataDigitizing notes, position within the hoop
- DimensionsMillimeters, stored at the end of the file
- SoftwareHusqvarna 6D/Premier+, Pfaff 6D
Machine compatibility and dimensions
VP3 gives the EXP design a complete frame: dimensions in millimeters, name and position recomputed from the geometry. On Husqvarna Viking / Pfaff, the preview shows the design centered in the hoop — handy after EXP, which displayed none of this.
