JEF to EXP Converter: Free Online, No Sign-Up

JEF is the native format of Janome, Elna and Kenmore machines; EXP, a minimal format used by Bernina and Melco, carries no colors. Convert JEF to EXP for free, no sign-up: stitches, jumps and trims stay identical; the section order is kept so you can reassign threads on the machine.

What changes in the JEF to EXP conversion

EXP receives your Janome design stitch sequence and nothing else: it is the leanest format in the matrix, ideal for Bernina and Melco machines.

  • The color palette is lost: EXP carries no colors, only thread-change stops.
  • No design name or dimensions: EXP is a pure stitch sequence.
  • The color section order is preserved: follow it when assigning threads.
  • Stitches, jumps and trims stay strictly identical.

Understanding the JEF and EXP formats

JEF .jef · as a source file

JEF sets out with the strengths of a Janome home format: stitches in tenths of a millimeter, explicit dimensions and a color palette backed by the Janome thread catalog. When the target format accepts a palette, your colors follow; otherwise, the section order remains the guide for reassigning threads.

  • BrandsJanome, Elna, Kenmore
  • HoopsFixed table: from 80 × 80 mm to 140 × 200 mm
  • ColorsPalette (Janome thread catalog)
  • MetadataDesign dimensions, selected hoop
  • Internal unitTenth of a millimeter

EXP .exp · as an output file

As a target, EXP serves Bernina and Melco machines: a minimal file with no ambiguity about geometry. Since no metadata is embedded, dimensions are not stored and colors remain to be assigned on the machine, in the section order inherited from the source.

  • BrandsBernina (home), Melco (industrial)
  • HeaderNone: the file starts directly with the stitches
  • ColorsNo palette: thread-change stops
  • EncodingSame as DST (3 bytes), without a header
  • MetadataNone (no name, no dimensions)

Machine compatibility and dimensions

JEF and EXP share the same base unit (the tenth of a millimeter): geometry passes to the millimeter. EXP does not keep dimensions in a header — the Bernina or Melco machine recomputes them from the stitches — so check the screen before starting, especially for large designs.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a JEF file to EXP?

Drop your .jef file in the conversion area above: the conversion to EXP is automatic. All that is left is to download the converted file.

EXP or DST for my Bernina machine: which one?

Both work: neither carries colors. If your Bernina natively accepts EXP, it is the most direct choice; DST remains useful as a universal copy reusable on any other machine.

How do I open a JEF or EXP file?

JEF files open with Janome Digitizer or the free Wilcom TrueSizer; EXP files open with the free Bernina ArtLink or Melco software. You can also convert JEF to EXP online for free with StitchConverter.

Is the JEF to EXP conversion free?

Yes. StitchConverter offers 2 free conversions every 24 h, with no sign-up. For unlimited use, go Premium (€1 per 24 h or €5 per month).

Do I need an account to convert a file?

No, no sign-up is required for free use. A Premium account is created automatically when you purchase, and you are identified by e-mail.
