Understanding the VP3 and DST formats

VP3 is the most complete source: a thread table (brand, code, tint), digitizing notes, dimensions and hoop position. Toward a rich format, everything transfers; toward a flat format (DST, EXP), only the geometry passes and the thread table flattens into thread-change commands.

DST .dst · as an output file
As a target, DST yields the most portable file there is: accepted by almost every machine, home or industrial. The palette is not kept (the format stores none) and the design name is truncated, but stitches and dimensions pass through unchanged — the header copies the footprint in tenths of a millimeter.

The DST header copies the VP3 dimensions in tenths of a millimeter: the footprint stays exact and checkable on any Tajima or industrial machine. The embroidery is identical; only the VP3 thread table and notes do not pass (see above).
